Overview of Everest Base Camp Trek – 14 days

Mount Everest Base Camp Trek needs no introduction. Everest, also known as Chomolungma by the locals, is immortalized by trekkers and climbers. Chomolungma is its name in the Tibetan dialect, while the Nepali name of Everest is Sagarmatha. The peak is located on the Nepal and China border.

Everest Base Camp Trek 14 days is a perfect opportunity for trekkers to experience the thrills in the Khumbu valley. Highlights of the Everest trek include visits to Lukla, Namche Bazaar, Syangboche, Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche, Gorakshep, Khumbu Glacier, trek the Everest Base camp itself, and Kala Patthar.

Namche Bazaar is the main town in the Everest region. It is located on a two days trek length from Lukla. Khumjung and Dingboche are famous Sherpa villages of Khumbu valley. Gorakshep is the last major town before Everest Base Camp. Lobuche is the starting point for the Khumbu glacier.

The most important two destinations, Everest Base camp, and Kala Patthar, lie at the very end of our journey. These two places reveal the full grandeur of the high Himalayas like no other place in the world.

The 14 days Everest Base Camp trek is tailored perfectly to extract most of the region. There are plenty of days for acclimatization, exploration, and gradual trekking. Our guides will ensure that you will be completely safe during the trek, and also make sure that you enjoy the beauty of the Everest region fully.

Everest Base Camp Trek offers many unique experiences – a chance of being close to some of the most beautiful and eight thousand-meter plus peaks in the world. The list contains names like Everest, Lhotse, Cho-Oyu, Makalu, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, Kangneta, Pumori, and Bancharo.

This Everest Base Camp trip is a rare opportunity to explore the unique flora and fauna, Dudhkoshi river, waterfalls, glaciers, monasteries, and rocky valleys. Animals like yak, jharal, blue sheep, mountain goat, snow leopard, and primates add to the thrill of the trip.

The fauna on this Everest trek is primarily subtropical in the lower belt, with rhododendron dominating the landscape. As we go further up, the vegetation turns to alpine, which is characterized by sparse pine trees. The most advanced reaches have few plants with snow completely dominating the terrain.

Should I worry about any other things on the Everest Base Camp trek?

Everest Base Camp trek is a challenging affair. You need to have some moderate experience of trekking in the mountains. We would also suggest that the trek to Everest Base Camp is mostly suitable for people above the age of sixteen.

Acclimatization could be an issue, so if you have previous experiences with altitude sickness, please consider appropriate medication or suggestions from your physician before starting the trek.

Having a small amount of money in cash can be beneficial for you should you consider buying some souvenirs.

Detail Itinerary

Our agency representatives will welcome you at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. Kathmandu is at an average altitude of 1,300 m from sea level. The city is a valley surrounded by lush green hills on all sides. Between the hills lies an ancient civilization, the roots of which extend back for millenia.

Evening before welcome dinner we explain all details about the Trip. Then you will have welcome dinner from our Agency.

We will commence your long awaited trip today. The first step is an early morning mountain flight from Kathmandu to Lukla Bazaar, situated in the eastern part of Nepal.

The flight is only about 30 minutes long but we prefer to start early because the morning mountain flight reveals a range of towering mountains in their full majesty, glistening to the first rays of the sun.

We will have our lunch in Lukla and also meet our porters there. Once we are all done in Lukla, we will start a trek towards Phakding village.

We will first follow the Dudh Koshi river and then navigate the trails of Thado Khola, a rivulet, before reaching Phakding. Phakding is a wonderful little village of the Sherpa people. The lifestyle is rustic and a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the chaos back in the everyday parts of the world.

The walk gets harder today because our destination is Namche Bazaar, a good six to seven hours of walk ahead from Phakding. Namche Bazaar is also known as the gateway town to Everest.

Our journey mostly passes through deciduous forests in the first phase. Rhododendron, the national flower of Nepal, turns the whole mountainside red if we happen to be trekking from around February to April.

The Dudh Koshi river is our constant companion for the day as we will cross the river multiple times. As we get past the small village of Monzo, we will reach the entrance of the Sagarmatha National Park.

Everest National Park was formed to protect and conserve the beautiful environment of the region. You will get the first sight of Mt. Everest from the path ahead. The trekking path offers view of mountains such as Mt. Thameserku, Mt. Kusum Kangaru, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Tawache etc. You will have the colorful vision of beautiful Namche Bazaar after trekking a long uphill path.

Since we have embarked on an arduous tour, we need to take things slowly so we will spend the day resting and acclimatizing at Namche Bazaar.

We will acclimatize today and prepare ourselves for the trek to Everest. You can have a chat with your guide regarding how to spend your leisure time. Guides normally suggest you pay a visit to the Everest View Point Hotel.  Mt. Everest, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Thamserku, Mt. Kusum Kangaru and Amadablam are on clear view from Everest View Point Hotel. You can visit the local Sherpa museum where you will get valuable information about the culture, way of living and history of the Sherpas.

Afrer Breakfast at guesthouse We will trek to Tengboche. The path is Gradual at first part and  down to Dudh koshi River we meet Phunkithanga and we up to the Tengboche Village and left side beautiful Monastery waiting for us. The Monastery has great importance to the Sherpa people and is a spiritual center with high importance placed on the ancient esoteric methods of yoga and meditation.

Tengboche is a popular place in Everest region. Tengboche is also famous for the glazing and shining views of Mt. Everest, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Nuptse, Mt. Amadablam etc.

Our destination for the day is Dingboche, a beautiful little valley juxtaposed between many mountains of moderate altitude. We will start the trek following breakfast.

Our trek passes through the wonderful village of pangboche and Somare . These villages are characterized by beautifully maintained houses, farms, stupas, chortens and monasteries. We will have ample time to stop by and share words with villagers.

One the way to Dingboche we will see the Massive view of Amadublam Muntain at right side .We will spend the night in Dingboche. Getting out and watching the starry sky on a pollution free night is an option but you will need to consider fatigue and cold before trying this.

Today After Breakfast we go to hike Nagarjuna hill about 5000 m. it takes about 3/4 hours in total. This walk will good for us to Acclimatize our body in this altitude. One the way we will see beautiful Imja valley and Pheriche valley and Massive Amadablam, island peak, Tawache peak, Cholatse Peak, Mt, Makalu, Lobuche peak etc.

We Back from the day hike to Nagarjuna hill and have lunch in our Guesthouse ands and Our second part of the day, we can rest in our Guest house.

The day consists of one of the hardest parts of the trek. We will walk right through the Khumbu valley. The first part of the trek is slightly downhill. We will cross an icy glacial lake and then the path starts to get uphill.

After ascending for a short while, we will reach a place known as Dugla. We will also come across a graveyard on our way today which is also call Thukla pass, which serves as a memorial for deceased climbers, mostly consisting of people who perished on their way to and from Everest.

Once we cross Dugla, we will head straight up towards the Khumbu Glacier. The path will get narrower, slipperier and more challenging as we move forward. However, once we get to the top of the ridge, the view is breathtaking. After 2 hours walk from Thukla we arrive Lobuche for over night’s stay.

After Early Breakfast in guesthouse we will have to first trek to a small settlement called Gorakshep. The path leads through glacier moraines and can be confusing if you have no one to accompany you. Safety is of paramount importance at this point.

We will slowly walk through the small pathways along the Khumbu Glacier, with the magnanimous Everest towering right before our eyes. We will rest for a while at Gorakshep before heading towards Everest Base Camp (EBC).

Everest Base Camp is simply surreal with mountains like Pumori, Lhotse and Nuptse competing with Everest in terms of which peak is the most spectacular one. We will spend some time watching the panoramic view of the mountains, taking photographs and catching breaths, although your breath would already have been taken away by the majesty of the surroundings.

Please note that the Base Camp can often get crowded in peak season. Since the Base Camp is quite desolate, there are no permanent alternatives of settlement. We will trek back to Gorakshep for the night.

A new day and a new thrill awaits. Today we will trek to Kala Patthar, the highest altitude point in our trek. Kala Patthar offers a unique vantage point – watching Everest as it lies semi hidden between other mountains, thus earning its nickname as the shy mountain.

Kala Patthar is situated at an altitude of 5,545 m. The high altitude means that there is non-existent vegetation and the place is characterized by large black boulders – thus earning its name as Kala (black) Patthar (Rock) in Nepali language. The View from here is Spectacular of Everest Nuptse, Lhotse, Amadublam, Pumori etc. full of Hight mountains around you.

Kala Patthar was also a place that hosted the highest altitude climate change summit in the world – an initiative by Nepal Government to raise awareness about the issues facing the Himalayas. It is better if we make the trip to Kala Patthar early because we will have an important headstart for the long day ahead.

After spending a few beautiful moments at Kala Patthar, we will take an alternative route towards Pangboche village. The trek now is mostly downhill and we have left the most difficult part of the tour behind.

We now enter the verdant tranquility of the forest region again. This part of the trek is about 15 km long but since we will mostly be going downhill, we can easily complete the trek with little effort.

Many trekkers often forget to take photographs of the trail while walking uphill because of the hardship accompanied with the journey. Walking downhill is the right time to take photographs if you missed the opportunity during the first time.

We will reach Namche Bazaar following a long day of walking. We will rest at Namche Bazaar and relive all the beautiful memories of the trek.

We will head back towards Lukla today. Since the trek is totally downhill with only a few stretches of upward walking, we can make it to Lukla for the night with stopping stopping at Phakding for Lunch break.

After lunch continue to Lukla  it takes 2 -3 hours more or less .We will spend the rest of the day in Lukla. Lukla is a busy place and there are many things to immerse yourself in. Buying souvenirs from the trip is one popular tourist experience as Lukla has many shops to cater to your needs.

We will end the Everest Base Camp (EBC) Trek today with a flight from Lukla to Kathmandu. You will relive the mountain flight experience once again. Drive from Airport to hotel and rest or the day free for you rest or shopping or whatever your choice.

There are two options for you now. If you wish to return back to your country or elsewhere, our representatives will accompany you to the airport and bid you farewell.

However, if you wish to continue the Nepal chapter of your holiday and visit other places, please convey your wishes to us as we can make suitable arrangements.

It is okay for you to decide for the second chapter with short notice because we have ample experience of handling impromptu responses.

Special Note for Trekkers:

Some of the Peak Season The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal may run flights from Ramechhap to Lukla and Lukla to  Ramechhap Airport in an effort to relieve congestion at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport. In this circumstance, any affected departures you will have to get up early on day 2 drive to the 135 kilometers (about 4-5-hours) from Kathmandu to Ramechhap airport and return. Transfers in a private vehicle will be provided at no additional cost. We will provide you with the most up-to-date information about flights.

Important Note:

The flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, where the journey begins, is normally trustworthy, but if the weather is poor, all flights for the day will be delayed or canceled. We will try to get you on a hired helicopter (depends on your interest )if the flight is cancelled, but you will be liable for the additional fees, which can range from $300 to $600 or more depending on the number of passengers on the flight.

Some itineraries include an extra day in the trek as a buffer in case of delays, while others do not. However, because flights can sometimes be delayed for many days, we recommend that you add a couple of extra days to the end of your trip in case of any delays. Extra days should always be added at the conclusion of the journey rather than the beginning.

Frequently Asked Question

  • Which is the best season for the Everest Base Camp Trek?

There are two windows for the EBC trek. The first one is from September to December and the second one is from February to May. Both seasons offer moderate climate and conditions for the trek.

Other seasons are might be risky either because of heavy snowfall or because of the melting ice, which makes walking difficult.

  • What is the maximum number of people we can come in a group with?

Anywhere between one traveler to forty is easily accommodated during EBC trek. If you have a larger group then this we can organise but we have to use two lodge in Trekking.

  • Are there any other costs from the upfront cost?

There are no hidden costs and it is our policy to refrain from that. You might want to do some personal shopping on the way so we request you to carry some cash with you. Group discount is available if you have a large company of friends and family.

  • Does the agency bear the cost of Helicopter evacuation if the situation arises?

We won’t be able to compensate for that. Therefore, we request you to take insurances that cover Helicopter evacuation before commencing the tour. if you have helicoter rescue insurance we can help you to arrangement. Please read our important notes and safety concerns for more details.

  • Are the wild animals a threat to my safety during the trek?

Absolutely not. The only animal that warrants a mention in this regard is the snow leopard. However, the snow leopard is a small member of the cat family and is a very shy species. They themselves stay away from humans and catching their glimpse is a rare feat. A group of travelers will easily scare them off even if they cross our path.

  • Can I make this trip alone because I like solo journeys?

It is possible if you have been to EBC before but we advise you not to do so. The landscape gets tricky as we move to higher altitude. Taking the wrong path is often a problem encountered by solo travelers, even if they have previous experience of Everest Base Camp Trek.

Moreover, it is very hard to walk along glacial moraines without professional assistance. Solo travelers also have a hard time finding hotels, which is an issue during peak season.

  • Do I need to tip the porters and guides?

Tipping is the appreciation and encourage formula for workers anywhere. Tip is not include in the price. Guide and porters are your helpers and also friends. while they have sufficient job to you might tip them. The least you can do is show your appreciation by tipping them generously. It is up to you how much you want to give depends on their quality of Service.

  • I heard tales about the mountain brew. Is it advisable to taste some during my trek?

Please refrain away from alcohol if you have any prior issue with altitude sickness, however small it might have been. Otherwise, you can taste some in moderation.

  • Are there any stigma associated with tourists in Nepal?

Absolutely not. The economy of Nepal is very much dependent on tourists so people here have long training in being hospitable and warm. Moreover, universal brotherhood/sisterhood is a long held cultural belief in Nepal. It is our tradition to welcome guests as Gods.

  • Can I reduce my Everest Base Camp trek duration by cutting off acclimatization days?

Please do not make such requests. Each tour is carefully planned by experts at our agency while looking at several factors like oxygen level in your body, duration of walk, the nature of the day’s trek etc. The acclimatization days are an integral part of the trek.
